What is WSU's Take on Alcohol and Drug Use?
Campus and local police will enforce all Washington State laws pertaining to drugs and alcohol, and the Office of Student Standards and Accountability will follow procedures outlined in Standards of Conduct for Students (WAC 504-26) when findings of violations occur. Students of legal age who choose to drink alcoholic beverages are expected to do so responsibly and according to the policies of their living environment (i.e., residence halls, Greek residences, campus apartments, etc.).
Most of us at Washington State University maintain a healthy lifestyle, balancing academics, health, and an active social life. The majority of students here at WSU make responsible decisions about the use or nonuse of drugs and alcohol. As you continue to adjust to the college life here at WSU, it is important that you understand and uphold the University standards. These standards are outlined at www.standards.wsu.edu, and it is important that you become familiar with them. The decisions about drugs and alcohol will have a significant impact on your academics and may result in disciplinary actions, including expulsion in egregious cases. Below is a quick reference to some of the do's and don'ts about drugs and alcohol.
- Remember why you are at college in the first place. Don't let alcohol and drugs interfere with your personal and profess-sional goals. Make responsible decisions about drugs and alcohol.
- Follow all Washington State laws regarding alcohol and drugs; they are NOT negotiable.
- If you are of legal age (21 years or older) to drink alcohol, be a responsible drinker by making decisions that do not put your health, personal safety, or the safety of those around you at risk.
- Seek out activities that result in positive experiences while attending WSU.
- Leave any residential hall room immediately if there is the presence of illegal or unauthorized drugs, so that you don't face any disciplinary actions from the University and/or local police.
- If you are under the age of 21, leave any residential hall room immediately if there is the presence of alcohol, so that you don't face any disciplinary actions from the University and/or local police. Even if you just walked in the room, the alcohol isn't yours, and/or you are completely sober, you will still be held accountable for breaking University Policy.
- Remember you will be held responsible by the University for all Standards of Conduct whether you are on campus or off campus. This includes University breaks. Remember you are representing WSU at all times.
- WSU Counseling Services is available if you need to talk to someone about the use of drugs and alcohol.

- Distribute alcohol to anyone under the age of 21.
- Drink or possess alcohol under the age of 21.
- Use, manufacture, or possess drugs (marijuana, narcotics, or other controlled substance) and drug paraphernalia (pipes, bongs, scales, cigarette papers, etc.).
- Drink alcohol at a sponsored event on any University property without an alcohol license or banquet permit. See

- Overconsume alcohol. Know your limit and be responsible.
- Students under the age of 21 years are prohibited by law and university standards in engaging in alcohol activities. The University must uphold the law and the Policy on Alcohol and Drugs outlined in these expectations. The consumption of intoxicating beverages by minors or providing such beverages to minors within WSU-recognized housing is prohibited. Conduct proceedings will be initiated against individuals and/or groups who do not exhibit responsible behavior and comply with University policy. Students whose behavior is a problem for the community should expect to be confronted by residents, staff, and University or Pullman police. Repeat offenders or situations where the health and safety of the community are at risk may result in students being removed from recognized University housing or living groups. These situations would also result in disciplinary action through the Student Conduct process.
Use of alcoholic beverages in residence halls and all recognized group living areas:
All students recognize that their presence during an alcohol/drug violation subjects them to disciplinary action. If students find themselves in a situation where alcohol/drug policy violations are occurring they should immediately leave.
- Students of legal drinking age and their legal aged guest(s) may possess and consume alcohol in the privacy of their own room. The door to the room must be closed at all times.
- Alcohol is prohibited in restrooms, corridors, study rooms, lounges, or any other public areas inside or outside the building.
- Kegs or bulk alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
- Students are expected to respect the “No Alcohol”policy on floors/living groups and/or designated residence halls.
- Alcohol is prohibited in sorority houses. Exceptions for personal use by legal age members or guests in the private areas of any fraternity are governed by each chapter.
Individuals residing in recognized University housing are responsible for the behavior of their guests. In cases where the guests of residents become unruly or violate University and organized living group policies, the resident host will be held accountable. University or Pullman police may be utilized in the confrontation of guests and other nonresidents who are disruptive or otherwise in violation of University policies.
Greek Community Alcohol Policy/Social Policy

Here are some quick guidelines for fraternities and sororities:
- Fraternities and sororities must comply with Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic social policies and procedures outlined for social functions.
- Members are required to be in compliance with their national or international regulations regarding alcohol consumption.
- All social events on chapter property must be alcohol free.
- Alcohol consumption on chapter property is prohibited by students under the legal drinking age and is restricted to the private rooms of students 21 years of age or older.
- Alcohol consumption is prohibited entirely during ANY social event on chapter property.
- All off-property social functions where alcohol is present require a third-party vendor to serve alcohol, provide security, and verify legal age.
- All event co-sponsors will be held equally responsible for policy compliance.
- The social policy will remain in effect throughout the calendar year, including breaks and summer for chapter houses while occupied by chapter members.
Alcoholic Beverages at Concerts or Athletic Events
Consumption or possession of alcohol in public areas of any University-owned or controlled property is prohibited except when those who are 21 years of age or older are participating in a sponsored event for which there is an alcohol license or banquet permit.
